TIME ZONE: Nova Scotia is on Atlantic Daylight Time, which is four hours earlier than Greenwich Mean Time and one hour later than North America's Eastern Time Zone. Daylight Saving Time is in effect annually from the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October. AREA CODE: 902 - This area code must be dialed for long distance calls into or within Nova Scotia. TRIVIA The heaviest one day snowfall in Nova Scotia was on February 19, 2004 when 37 inches, or 95 cm of snow fell. In the winter of 1964-65, 21.5 feet or 653 cm of snow fell in Nova Scotia. The first paper in North America, the Halifax Gazette, was published in Halifax in 1752. The most powerful non-atomic man made blast in history occured in Halifax Harbour on December 6, 1917, when the French munitions ship the Mont Blanc collided with the Norwegian Imo. 2000 died and damages in today's currency reached $450,000,000.
Why are Nova Scotians called "Bluenosers"? Some say it came from Sailors who wore blue mittens in the winter and when they rubbed their noses the dye came off on their nose. Nova Scotia is Canada's top blueberry producer. Each year Nova Scotia sends more than 2 million Christmas trees to market. Nova Scotia is the world's largest exporter of lobster. The largest recorded lobster was caught off Nova Scotia in 1977 weighing 44.6 pounds and measuring 3 feet 6 inches from claw to tail. Between 1921 and 1938 the Nova Scotia schooner, the Bluenose, built in Lunenburg, NS won every race at the International Fishing Sailing race.
